Tips for Spring Van Care and Maintenance

After another long and wet UK winter, it’s important to take some steps to make sure your van is in tip top condition ready for the months ahead. Regular scheduled servicing will take care of your vehicle and keep the warranty valid, but giving your van a little bit of extra attention as we move into spring can go a long way. 

Whether you’re a tradesperson, delivering parcels or running a business, you rely on your van to get the job done. Here are our top tips for spring van care…

Tyres, tyres, tyres!

Winter can take its toll on tyres. Potholes and icy weather can add to existing wear and tear. With the likelihood of more April showers ahead, it’s a good idea to check that your van’s tyres are still in good nick.

• How’s your tread depth looking? Although the legal minimum is 1.6mm, most experts would recommend at least a 3mm tread depth to make sure you have good purchase on the road, whatever the weather.
• Time for tracking? Uneven wear across your tyres (getting balder in some places more than others) might mean you need to look into getting your vehicle’s tracking checked. Cold snaps throughout winter can lead to cracking tyres as the rubber expands and contracts with the change in temperature.
• How’s your air pressure looking? Keeping your tyres at the correct PSI will make sure they last longer. So, keeping an eye on air pressure variations is important during spring when temperature changes can make it seem like midwinter one day and the height of summer the next.

Servicing

New vans and vans on lease will have a regular scheduled servicing plan to make sure your vehicle keeps running smoothly. Check with your vehicle’s manufacturer, usually you’ll need a service after 2 years or 25k miles (whichever comes first).

After a busy winter, it might be worth checking your vehicle over even if you’re in between scheduled services. With spring’s unpredictable driving conditions it’s smart to check your fluid levels, wear to brake pads, and that your windscreen wipers are still effective.

Wash off the Winter

Salt, grit and mud can build up. Give your van a good wash, paying special attention to your van’s undercarriage and wheel arches. This will stop any corrosives that cause rust, and make sure your vehicle is ready for anything, for as long as you need it.

Turning up to any jobs in a shiny clean van will always be a bonus, whether you’re making a first impression or visiting a regular customer.

Battery and Lights

Another part of your van that could be affected by cold weather is your battery. It’s smart to double check it hasn’t weakened over winter. There’s nothing worse than unexpected downtime if you’re stuck without a vehicle when you might have been able to prevent it.

Double check all of your exterior lights too! Brakes, indicators, side lights… A quick look and a couple of quid for a new bulb could save you from future hassle and even possible safety issues if you’re not aware your vehicle’s lights have blown.

Spring Clean!

It doesn’t need to be long job but a quick survey of your vehicle, a tidy up; making sure you’re not carrying around unnecessary weight, can help improve your efficiency on the job.

A quick whip around can also save you from spending out unnecessarily on fuel because you’re carrying around more weight than you need to. You’d be surprised how quickly that little bit of extra weight can add up in fuel costs over a month.
